Football is a game that requires lots of padding for the
players. Football players are taught to be aggressive and strong hitters
because the fierceness of a hit will have a direct impact on where the ball is
put out of play; and in football, centimeters could determine a glorious win or
a devastating loss. In order to safeguard the health of football players,
padding has evolved over the decades and has not only escalated in the amount
of pads used, but there is a sports science behind it that is constantly
looking for lightweight solutions that can allow players to move faster while
wearing them. Below are some of the types of padding you will see worn by those
on the gridiron.
Shoulder/Chest Pads
Most hits are made towards the torso area, because it is the
area where defenders can literally fold their opponent and move the in the
direction that they please. That is why it is important to protect the chest
and shoulders with pads, because the momentum of the defender could otherwise,
and sill could, cause serious injury.
Cups
It is also important to protect the groin area, as low hits
and the defenders helmet, just to pain one example, can cause some very painful
hits.
